Dear Art and Architecture Club

The Art and Architecture Club in collaboration with the Beyond the M25 Club will be making a spring trip to Stowe Gardens and Waddesdon Manor on Saturday 25th April 2009. We plan to spend the morning at Waddesdon Manor and then spend the afternoon and early evening enjoying Stowe Gardens and its parkland. We will leave from outside WGH at 7:45am and shall return by 8pm.

There are 13 places available on the coach that are specially reserved for Art and Architecture Club members, at the lower price of £8 for adults and £6 for children, £4 for infants (reduced from £12/£10/£6 which is the price for the rest of Goodenough College and for non-Goodenough members) – this includes all coach fares and entry to both National Trust properties.

If you would like to reserve a place please email artnarchclub [[AT]] googlemail [[DOT]] com with your name and room number, preferably by Friday 10 April.

Thank you to David and Sarah from the Beyond M25 club for helping us organize this.

Stowe is one of the three or four great eighteenth century landscape gardens of England, arguably second in importance and influence only to Stourhead (which the Art and Architecture Club visited last year). William Kent and Capability Brown both worked on the design. As with Stourhead, the garden is designed in the form of a succession of temples, follies, and bridges over artificial lakes, set into a glorious arcadian landscape (there is also a famous Palladian bridge, which is interesting on the heels of our trip to the Palladio exhibition at the RA). Bring a picnic basket!

Waddesdon Manor is the Rothschild family’s spectacular French Renaissance revival manor house, modelled after the great chateaus of the Loire Valley. A highlight for art and design enthusiasts is the Waddesdon art collection. There are major paintings here by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Rubens, Watteau, and Boucher. Waddesdon’s eighteenth-century French decorative arts collection (Sevres porcelain, furniture, etc) rank in quality, rarity, and comprehensiveness with those of the Metropolitan Museum, NYC, and the Louvre, Paris. Waddesdon has been picked as one of the top ten stately homes to visit in the UK: http://gouk.about.com/od/uktoppicks/ig/English-Stately-Homes/

A New York Times article about Waddesdon: “England’s Rothschild Chateau” http://www.nytimes.com/1989/03/05/travel/england-s-rothschild-chateau.html

For an account of the social history of Stowe (and a reminder of the social history of heritage properties in general), see George Monbiot’s recent article in The Guardian newspaper about the eviction of the local working classes to make way for the gardens: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/feb/24/monbiot-civil-liberties.

For more professional scholars of eighteenth-century landscape design (with access to academic journals through your university), have a look at the special issue of The Huntington Library Quarterly which has a collection of essays on Stowe Landscape Gardens, Vol. 55, No. 3, Summer, 1992.

Hello all,
After a break in the year’s schedule for Christmas and a busy January, we’re pleased to announce the next event in the Art and Architecture Club calendar.

We have three complimentary tickets for a screening of British and Australian artists’ film and video at Tate Modern this Saturday 7 February, 5 pm. This screening is part of the weekend-long show Figuring Landscapes, an exhibition of artists’ moving image from UK and Australia, which will tour both countries after its London premiere at Tate Modern. The exhibition comprises five screenings of different programmes of artists’ film and video over the weekend. Though we are unable to get complimentary tickets for the other four screenings, please do go along to any of them if you are interested. Full details below and at the following websites:
http://www.studycollection.co.uk/figuringlandscapes/
http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/eventseducation/film/figuringlandscapes.htm

Fifty-eight artists are participating, including several current and former representatives to the Venice Biennale http://www.australiavenicebiennale.com.au/ The event is partly sponsored by the Australian High Commission in London.

I will be on hand for the Saturday screening (which features this year’s Australian delegate to the Venice Biennale) to represent the curatorial team and to introduce the screening.

A catalogue edited by myself and the two head curators will be on sale.

If you want to come along, please RSVP to artnarchclub [[AT]] googlemail [[DOT]] com by Wednesday night so that we can secure the tickets. Please state your room number when RSVPing. If you are not a student and do not have a student ID card, please let us know.

UPDATE: We can confirm that we will be screening two short films by the Eameses, if there is time, plus Joris Ivens’s classic twelve-minute city symphony film from 1929, Regen (Rain).

Dear Art and Architecture Club / Goodenough College members

You are all invited to a film screening and social this Sunday 23 November, in the Willy G large common room. After dinner drinks will be provided from 8 pm, and the screenings will run through the evening.

The centrepiece of the film screening will be Frank Gehry: An Architecture of Joy, a 58 minute long documentary about the world famous architect of the Bilbao Guggenheim and the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles. This film is courtesy of a current Goodenough member, Ben Blackwood:
http://www.michaelblackwoodproductions.com/archm_gehry1.php

The evening will also feature screenings of artists’ films, many of them by Goodenough members and alumni, including Deirdre O’Dwyer, Katherine Bash, and more.
Since Sunday is also the Art and Architecture Club’s trip to the Cold War Modern exhibition at the V&A, we will also endeavour to screen a couple of films by Charles and Ray Eames, in keeping with the theme, if we have enough time (Charles and Ray Eames feature prominently in the Cold War Modern exhibition).

This evening is open to all Goodenough residents, not just Art and Architecture Club members, so feel free to forward this webpage to friends who might like to come for after dinner drinks, plus a film or five.

Dear Art and Architecture club members,

Welcome (or welcome back) to Goodenough College. We’re looking forward to a new academic year, hopefully filled with lots of Art and Architecture club activities. At the moment, we have got several events in development, which may include visits to see modernist architecture at the London Zoo, contemporary art at the world famous Frieze art fair, Andy Warhol at the Hayward Gallery, Miro, Calder, Giacometti, Braque at the Royal Academy, day trips to several National Trust properties, a group show of artworks by college members in the Willy G gallery, the annual Goodenough College Artists’ Talks evening, plus lots more. As far as this year’s budget will allow, all trips outside the college will be subsidised, and all internal events will include free wine and food — so we hope you can join us! And if you are keen to propose any additional events which you would like to help organise, you are more than welcome to contact us at the email address below.
